Xifaxan is used for treating intestinal bacterial infection. This medicine belongs to the category of antibiotic drugs. It is used for treating travelers’ diarrhea in adults. This type of diarrhea is caused by E. coli. This type of infection occurs due to contaminated food and drinks. The Xifaxan drug is also used for reducing the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in adults suffering from liver failure. The drug is also useful in lowering the risk of worsened brain function. The brain functioning may suffer when the liver cannot function properly and is not able to remove toxins from the body. You should inform your doctor if you suffer from severe liver disease.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Xifaxan
If you suffer from diarrhea with fever or are experiencing watery or bloody diarrhea, then you should get in touch with your doctor immediately. You should take brand or generic Xifaxan according to your doctor’s directions. Do not overdose or take it longer than prescribed. The medicine cannot treat viral infections. This medicine contains Rifaximin. You should not take this drug without doctor’s consultation, if you are pregnant. It is not known whether the drug can pass into breast milk or not. Therefore, be careful if you are nursing a baby.
Brand or generic Xifaxan may cause hypersensitive reactions such as rash, flushing and exfoliative dermatitis. These symptoms may occur as early as within 15 minutes of the administration of the drug. It is not known if Rifaximin is safe or not for people below the age of 12. Therefore, talk with your doctor if you need to administer this drug to a child below 12 years.
The recommended initial dosage of this drug for treating travelers’ diarrhea is one 200 mg tablet taken thrice a day. This drug is meant to be taken orally. It may be taken with or without food. For Hepatic Encephalopathy, the recommended dosage is one 550 mg tablet taken twice a day. The 200 mg drug comes in the form of a round table, whereas 550 mg comes as an oval tablet. Xifaxan should be stored at a temperature between 20 degrees and 25 degree Celsius.
